35 – Mushrooms w. Shawn Gray

Shawn Gray is back yet again! This time to break down those insane decomposers: mushrooms.

We talk about how to use them in your cooking, how they’re not quite vegetables nor animals, how they may have informed the development of the human species, and so much more! Seriously, we’ll be doing another episode on this because there was so much that we didn’t even talk about.

Make sure to check out Shawn’s group Edmonton Garbage Warriors to ensure the mushrooms aren’t the only ones cleaning things up out there this season!

34 – The Mummy (1999) vs. Van Helsing (2004) w. Dustin Meisinger & Shawn Gray

Two movies. Two debaters. One judge. One winner.
Two of the original “Wenghsters” are here: Dustin Meisinger & Shawn Gray in order to figure out which movie written & directed by Stephen Sommers is better!
Dustin is arguing for 1999’s The Mummy, while Mitch battles uphill for 2004’s Van Helsing. Shawn will chew on their words, to then spit out the definitive answer to which is the greater film.

33 – Cheese w. Nick Eaton

Nick Eaton is back and he’s cheesier than ever – cause we’re talking about cheese.

We explain how cheese became a building block to our lives, we run through some historical cheese trivia, we discuss some of our favourite methods of putting cheese in your face hole. So if you’re curious about cycloptic cheese or you’re just looking for a new party treat (it’s Devils on Horsebacks), this is the episode for you!

I spoke with first-time attendee Joshua Misener about holding space within yourself and going to spaces held by others.
I spoke with Kyle Fairall of Queerflex: a non-profit LGBTQIA2S+ gym & fitness group.
I spoke with “Worm Dance Instructor” Patti Daye from the City of Edmonton Master Composter Recycler Program to talk about Worm Composting.
Please make sure to check out all these fine human beings and the work that they do!

30 – Marvel & DC Movies w. Joel Taras

We’re not playing around here. Joel Taras & I sit down to compare our lists ranking ALL of the live-action Marvel and DC comic book movies. That’s right: 82 movies across 7 decades of film-making all broken down in a totally appropriate amount of time to be spent talking about superhero movies.

So strap in and get ready to dive into a conversation that’s almost three times longer than a bunch of movies on this list. Can’t imagine a better way to catch up before Avengers: Infinity War!

Here are the lists.
Ask Joel about more comic book things via his Instagram!

29 – Pizza w. Sophie Gareau-Brennan

Who else but Sophie Gareau-Brennan could be on the show to talk about how much we love pizza?!

We break down our favourite kinds of pizzas/toppings; we discuss the differences between all the local & international pizza joints; we reveal our own personal pizza histories; all of it as a way to show how much we truly love this glorious category of food.

Perhaps Sophie and I will talk more about food in the future. Perhaps you could begin following us talking about food on Twitter.

28 – Models of Masculinity w. Emanuel Dubbeldam & Sophie Gareau-Brennan

2 returning guests on this episode! Emanuel Dubbeldam & Sophie Gareau-Brennan are here to have a chat about masculinity and what makes a man.

We break down what it takes to be a man the only way we knew how: by using the 5-line chorus of Mulan‘s ‘I’ll Make a Man Out of You’ as our starting model of masculinity. We continue to discuss the gender politics & sexual identity issues raised in the film via the Internet classic: Am I Gay?: A Journey of Self Discovery with Shang (seriously, who made this meme-gem?!). We also talk about the various real-life or fictional men & women in our lives who helped shape our perceptions of masculinity & femininity.

Go follow Emanuel on Twitter and also go follow Sophie’s Twitter for upcoming surprises!

You should also check out Emanuel’s first appearance on WenghTalk when we went over Transgender Questions.

27 – Poetry & Vulnerability w. Cristina Filomena

Poet, actress, singer, person, Cristina Filomena is here to talk about her recently published book of poems: Lost. A Collection of Poetry and Prose.

We cover the whole journey of how one goes from having their break-up poems in their journal, to having a book of your work published and sold to people for money. We discuss the vulnerability inherent in creativity, poetry, and in online criticism. Cristina also gifts us with a reading of one of her poems!

So make sure to get the book however you can, check out Cristina’s Instagram, and keep an eye out for her music.

PS: we forgot to mention that Cristina has a music gig coming up at Blackbird Cafe April 26th 6:30pm as part of her duo: One Fell Swoop.

26 – Titanic (1997) w. Marina Power & Sophie Gareau-Brennan

Goodness me! An episode with two guests! Marina Power & Sophie Gareau-Brennan join me on an adventure with one of the most impactful films of all time: 1997’s Titanic.

We talk about our memories and histories with this movie; we check back in after watching the movie ourselves to debrief; we expand our understandings of this movie through the ‘Jack is Jacqueline‘ theory, the parody film Thumbtanic, and through Marina’s Lord of the Rings/Titanic fan-fiction. Sufficed to say, we go through a true rollercoaster of emotions in this one.

You can find Marina on Instagram or on Twitter.

You can also find Sophie on Instagram.
