33 – Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

2018 is so spooky that we had to do one more, so we watched the horror musical: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007).

We explain the history behind the Broadway show, Sondheim, and the long process to getting this on film. We talk the pros & cons of adaptation and how a story about eating people can become so darn popular.

31 – Delicatessen (1991)

This week Sophie & Mitch watched the cult French film Delicatessen (1991).

Ho-boy what a movie: an apartment building full of weirdos atop a butcher shop after some sort of apocalypse. It’s super odd, super French, and super fun. If you need more strangeness this Halloween, this is the movie for you.

30 – Matango: Attack of the Mushroom People (1963)

The horror continues with 1963’s Matango: Attack of the Mushroom People!

Sophie & Mitch recount their experience watching this hidden gem from Godzilla & Toho legend Ishiro Honda! We discuss all the atmospheric spookiness of this forbidden island movie, the real life scariness of mushrooms, and the machinations of a cephalopod/fungi alliance.

58 – Holes (1998/2003) w. Sophie Gareau-Brennan

Sophie Gareau-Brennan is here to talk about the 1998 book & the 2003 film Holes.

We discuss the differences between the book & movie, the reasons why this story meant so much to us, and the different children’s books we would make into movies.

Most importantly: Dig it uh oh-oh. Dig it.

So make sure to hit up Sophie via her Twitter if you’d like to chat more about Holes or foodstuffs or other children’s books; or just check out the show we host: We Watch Food
