The God of Cookery (1996)

Ep. 63

Continuing the summer movies with Stephen Chow’s 1996 film The God of Cookery, and hoboy what a movie.

We try to discern the actual plot, make sense of the intense stylization, and figure out if Stephen Chow (the character) ever really learned the secret of cooking. We know he has magic food-related kung fu, and that’s worth the watch alone, if you’re looking for something wacky and more.

The Pagemaster (1994) w. Sophie Gareau-Brennan

Ep. 99

Sophie Gareau-Brennan is back to talk about another magical blast from the past: 1994’s The Pagemaster!

We talk about this trippy journey through various genres, mediums, and public domain books. We try to discern the full impact this film had on my psyche, as a child and a grown-ass adult. And, most importantly, we look to the books…

Big Night (1996)

Ep. 61

We just watched the wonderful film Big Night (1996), aka Two Brothers with a Restaurant and They’re Italian.

We discuss the impressive directorial decisions, the written & visual storytelling, and a final scene that is one of the best from any movie we’ve seen – food-related or otherwise. Plus drunken octogenarians, Italian Bilbos, and so much more.

Merlin (1998) w. Sophie Gareau-Brennan

Ep. 98

Sophie Gareau-Brennan of the We Watch Food podcast is here to talk about a blast from her past: the 1998 TV miniseries Merlin.

We discuss how time changes our perspectives on certain media, how well this Sam Neil as Merlin adaptation does (even with it being made-for-90s-TV), and what our personal mentor wizards were growing up.

31 – Delicatessen (1991)

This week Sophie & Mitch watched the cult French film Delicatessen (1991).

Ho-boy what a movie: an apartment building full of weirdos atop a butcher shop after some sort of apocalypse. It’s super odd, super French, and super fun. If you need more strangeness this Halloween, this is the movie for you.

42 – Mummies Alive! p.2 w. Dustin Meisinger

Continuing our adventure into the 1997 series Mummies Alive!, Dustin Meisinger joins us to explore what ancient Egypt was really like.

We also discuss merchandizing ideas, circuitous poisons, and how easy it is to work up a protest or two when it comes to your local Egypt museum.

Make sure to message Dustin on Twitter about all of your Mummies Alive! theories and questions.

25 – Mummies Alive! p.1 w. Sophie Gareau-Brennan

Sophie Gareau-Brennan & I begin a possible new chapter in the WenghTalk story: retrospectives on obscure 90’s cartoons like Mummies Alive!

We address how ridiculous all of this is, how this was an era of cartoons long forgotten (even to those who were kids when it happened), and the impossible economics of the museum that Presley’s mom works for.

So if you remember this series, please let us know! It is incredibly difficult to find & I would LOVE to continue through this gem of a cartoon.
